Disco Friday: Tommie Sunshine "Dance Among The Ruins" (MP3)

Brooklyn, NY based DJ/producer Tommie Sunshine released "Ultra Rock Remixed," a kicky compilation of his recent remixes on Ultra Records last month. Discovered by Felix da Housecat at a record store in Atlanta, Tommie "Rock DJ" Sunshine has built a solid reputation for turning indie rock gems into world-class dance stompers. With his help, bands like Panic! At This Disco were able to crossover from the rock circuit and be presented to a whole new audience.
Sunshine's vision to producing music is straightforward. "I want people to freak out and get a reaction. Bitch about it, talk about it. Even if that isn't always good," he said in an interview.
The double disc set "Ultra Rock Remixed" definitely gives you something to dance about. It includes mixes of The Sounds "Tony The Beat, The Gossip "Jealous Girls," Gang Of Four "At Home He's A Tourist" and "Yeah Yeah Yeahs "Y Control." Two of Sunhine's own creations are included on the album as well. Tommie and Ultra were happy to share those two tracks for your Disco Friday. My favorite of the two is "Dance Among The Ruins, a punchy electro-house tune with a hot, driving bassline.

Free Download: Hello Operator "55 Regrets"

Hello Operator's "55 Regrets" is some of the best melodic guitar pop I've heard in a while. After touring with Hillary Duff, the four members of this Toronto-based outfit have hit the road on their own to promote their new digital EP "So Free."
As press release describes Hello Operator as "The Cars covering 'Cars' by Gary Numan." That description hits the nail right on the head. Listen how singer Mike Condo channels a young Ric Ocasek on "55 Regrets." The band is gaining steam in Canada where they recently appeared on MuchMusic and were tipped as one of the hottest bands to look out for in 2007 by Canoe.ca.
Produced by Mike Condo and Evan Huson, "55 Regrets" is the result of experimentation with guitars and synths in the studio. It is a spunky pop rock stomer with a kicking new wave pulse, an infectious '80s pomp and plenty of attitude that will keep you lusting for more. Sara Indrio makes music that is somewhat reminiscent of the style and sound that Norah Jones has popularized. But Indrio gives her contemporary folk pop a flavor of her own with her background as a percussionist, her distinct vocals and lyrical perspective.
Indrio started her musical career as a percussionist during her teenage age years. At age 18, she was admitted to the prestigious Conservatory of Rhythmical Music in Copenhagen. During her studies she developed an interest in Latin American percussion, which led to a brief time in Cuba where she studied Afro-Cuban folklore drumming.
When she return to Denmark, she forged relationships with several local pop musicians with whom she collaborated. Warner Music in Sweden recognized Indrio's talent and offered her a record deal. Her first album "Dark Clouds, Silver Linings" was a critical success in 2004 and was followed by "While We Dream" last year.
The song that is currently impacting radio stations in the U.K. is "Big City Night." It is a scaled-down folky pop song that clearly demonstrates Indrio's gift for poetic storytelling. It also reflects the singer's fascination with making "darkness and light intertwine" in her songs. "Zipping up your coat, heading home. Through the Big City Night. Always someone with something to sell. Down by the red lights," she sings. "At the bar with a cigarette. In the Lonely Hearts Club. There’s a way out by going in. Just give in and give up."

Free Download: Charlotte Gainsbourg "The Songs That We Sing"

The French have a knack for making everything a bit more classy and chic at times. Not only in their cuisine and fashion, but also in their music. Sometimes it is dowright pretentious, but often it is simply brilliant. Take for example the music from Charlotte Gainsbourg. The French actress and singer gathered a fine group of songwriters and producers that help her craft "5:55," one of my favorite albums of 2007 so far. It will hit stores in the U.S. on April 24.
Charlotte is the daughter of famed French singer Serge Gainsbourg and British songstress and actress Jane Birkin. You might remember that lusty love song "Je T'aime Mais Non Plus" the couple recorded in 1969. Over the years, Charlotte, now 35, has fully stepped away from her parents' shawdow and built a n impressive career of her own.
In 1984, she made her acting debut and since then she has played it numerous movies that have garnered her many awards and plenty of critical-acclaim. Noteworthy detail is that Madonna sampled Charlotte’s voice – an extract from one of her films – as the intro to "What It Feels Like For a Girl" in 2001.
The idea for "5:55" was born when Charlotte met Air's Nicolas Godin at a Radiohead concert in Paris. He invited Nigel Godrich to work with him and Charlotte on an album after Godrich previously produced Air and Radiohead. The chanteuse also invited esteemed lyricists Jarvis Cooker and the Divine Comedy's Neil Hannon to contribute to the record.
The result is an album that combines both style and substance. The delicate and delightful "The Songs That We Sing" is a good example of that. The song makes a statement about Western consumerist culture. "I saw a photograph a woman in a bath of hundred dollar bills. If the cold doesn't kill her, money will," she sings. Tres magnifique! Move over Avril and Nelly, Vivek Shraya could easily be Canada's next major pop act. The handsome singer combines catchy electro pop with straight up lyrics and traditional songwriting sensibilities that is both sweet and crunchy. Shraya puts out the type of music that is different yet still familiar enough to please the mainstream.
The singer first hit the local music scene in his hometown of Edmonton, but recently moved to Toronto to reach a bigger audience and look for more opportunities. He has been making music since he was a teenager, but he has been pursuing a career as a recording artist for the last four years. One of Shraya's biggest fans is Tegan Quin of girl duo Tegan & Sara who contributed vocals to his song "The Alphabet."
Even though the sound of Shraya's music has a strong electro pulse, his music is primarily driven by his soulful voice. He explains in an interview with Mote Magazine that his music usually starts out with a visual aspect. "Either I get a lyrical idea and I write lyrics first and try to listen to the words and let them guide me melodically or, I'lll be on my guitar fooling around and a part will come up and I'll jam out a song. For me, the way I approach music is very visual so I'll have an abstract image in my mind."
Listen to the gritty "Chemistry." It is about a man so head over heels in love that he has no patience whatsoever. "I was never a fan of counting to ten. One. Two. Free Download: Snowden "Black Eyes" (Remix)

Snowden is an indie rock outfit from Atlanta, GA fronted by Jordan Jeffares. Their full-length debut "Anti Anti" was released last year and it is slowly but surely gaining momentum among alt-rock fans. It is not something that usually rocks my playlist, but I do like a remix DJ Le Castle Vania produced of the group's single "Black Eyes." He turned the original in a peppy electro tune and even added a vocoder in the chorus, which makes the "shake, shake, shake" a lot more encouraging.

Free Download: Svoy "Driving Away"

Svoy was born in a small port town in the Russian Far East. At a young age, he took an interest in music and moved to Moscow to attend the Russian Academy of Music. He impressed his professors and was offered a scholarship to study jazz at Boston's Berklee College of Music, the word's largest independent music school. In Boston, he experimented with different genres and discovered that he didn't want to be limited by just playing jazz. "I entered Berklee as a jazz pianist and left as a pop electronica artist," the talented singer says in a press statement. "I think a lot of my professors won't forgive me for that."

He wrote and produced all the songs on his debut "Electric" that was picked up by Rendezvous Records. Lead single taken from the album is "Driving Away," a gorgeous pop song with dreamy harmonies, a compelling rhythm section and a deliciously hooky chorus. Fans of Imogen Heap and comparable electro-pop will be in for a treat.

Svoy's lyrics are equally engaging. He serves up hope for those looking to find their own way. "I'm running away. From blue hiding grey. From doubt and despair. There must be an exit somewhere.
