Global Beats: Oreskaband "Pinocchio" (Japan)

The Japanese love all things fun and quircky. That same feeling came to mind when I first heard about a new group of Japanese female high school students who play J-Pop-oriented ska music. Their name is Oreskaband and they are stirring up a storm in Japan. Even tough the sextet's music has not been formally released in the U.S., their label is touching the waters to see if North American audiences are up for something sweet and crunchy.
It all started for the high schoolers when the group's song "Yeah!" was featured in a TV commercial for Pocky, a very popular Japanese candy. Juggling the roles of students and recording artists, Ikasue (guitar & vocals), Tomi (bass & vocal), Tae-San (drums), Saki (trumpet), Morika (sax) and Leader (trombone) completed their debut mini album "Ore" with six original tracks in March 2006. The EP was released in July and received critical acclaim, whch led to a breakthrough performance at the Fuji Rock Festival.
Now, Oreksaband has set their sight on North America. The girls will be performing at SXSW in Austin next week to show off their live tricks. Stream their track "Pinocchio" or get it here. It is a totally fun and invigorating tune that will get your feet tapping right away.
